Manfred Peckl (1968, Austria, lives and works in Berlin)
WORD! is Peckl's second solo exhibition at the gallery.
In his artistic practice, established artist Manfred Peckl uses many
different methods and media. He is known for his intensively expressive collages,
texts, music and sculptures, his play with identities, as well as for his wild
performances. Peckl now surprises with his first series of paintings in 30 years!

Manfred Peckl paints the world with words. The designation of classical
art historical subjects such as NUDE for the nude, PORN or SEX for the sexual
act, ME for the self-portrait, WE for a group photo or SEA for a landscape
are alternated with various other abstract and concrete terms such as STOP,
FACT, JAZZ or FUCK. In such a way that they become sculptures of their own
concepts, of their meaning. The words, repeatedly painted transparently in
multi-coloured overlapping circles, simultaneously release associations from the collective
visual memory. We are confronted with the question of naming and
designation. Repetition is a principle of remembering and letting go in equal measure. Both
lead to new insights, to new images. Their forms, each with specific internal
orders, emerge from the ambivalence of signs and spaces, the painted
and the unpainted, the spoken and the unspoken:

Read between the lines!

It is a game with different levels. In some cases, the notion of the
image is only partially perceived at first.

Only at second glance does ASH CASH, HIT SHIT or AND SAND become, for example. The reduction
to four letters per word is based on the four sides of the square, the four corners and
the four cardinal points and is manifested in the images by the motif of
the cross. The images with three-letter words radiate in three directions per colour, and the
images with two-letter words look in two directions per colour. The words
meander concentrically from rays to circles in squares. Speed, the impression of a
turning movement in many images, creates a kaleidoscope in the large ensemble.

Net als onze persoonlijkheid is onze werkelijkheid niet statisch, maar in een staat van
voortdurende verschuiving en verandering. Niets is wat het lijkt. Een verandering in
perspectief verandert soms alles. Dit is een fascinerend aspect van de werken van Julia
Schewalie, die een inherent efemere en ontmoetende kwaliteit hebben die vaak gepaard
gaat met een verbijsterend ongebruikelijk materiaalgebruik. Wat op het eerste gezicht een
perfect monochroom beeld lijkt, is bij nadere bestudering veel gevarieerder. Al haar werken
ontvouwen zich in relatie tot hun omgeving en zijn afhankelijk van het licht, de schaduwen
en de beweging in hun omgeving. De manier waarop ze voortdurend van uiterlijk
veranderen kenmerkt de aantrekkingskracht. De manier waarop de oppervlakken afwisselen
met het licht verleent de werken een dynamische kwaliteit; er wordt iets in beweging gezet
door de kijkers en hun veranderende posities of de verandering van de lichtomstandigheden
in de ruimte.

Deze werken van Julia Schewalie zijn het resultaat van een voortdurend proces van
fragmentatie dat begon met figuratie op doek, waarin zij de figuur geleidelijk liet oplossen.
Door de stap naar beeldhouwkunst te maken, stelde zij zich uiteindelijk in staat het element
beweging te integreren en hiermee ontstonden haar eerste monochrome ‘schilderijen’. De
tentoonstelling ‘Black is black, but sometimes not’ concentreert zich op deze zwarte en grijze
werken, waarin zij de kleur, eigenlijk een staat van duisternis, volop ruimte geeft voor alle
tinten van de afwezigheid van licht en leegte.

Julia Schewalie werd in 1988 geboren in Krasilovka, in de regio Pawlodar in de Kazachse SSR,
tegenwoordig de Republiek Kazachstan, en ze kwam in 1996 naar Duitsland toen haar familie
gerepatrieerd werd vanwege haar Duitse erfgoed. Ze studeerde aan de Academie voor
Schone Kunsten in München van 2009 tot 2015 bij Anke Doberauer en Hermann Pitz. Ze
studeerde af met een “Diplom” in Fine Art. Haar werk was te zien in solo- en
groepstentoonstellingen in Duitsland, Rusland, Groot-Brittannië, Polen, Nederland en
Oostenrijk. Ze heeft niet alleen twee residentiebeurzen ontvangen (Centrum voor Poolse 

Beeldhouwkunst in Orońsko, Polen, in 2018 en Vila Paula, Klenová, Tsjechië, 2021), maar
haar werken zijn ook aangekocht door de Beierse Staatscollectie voor Schilderkunst in 2017
en 2018. In 2018 was ze de winnaar van de Kunstverein Aichach Art Fellowship.
