Christy Groen

Christy Groen

Christy Groen (Amersfoort, 1991) Graduated from Aki Artez in Enschede and now lives and works in Zwolle.

In this series of pixel paintings, Christy investigates the television screen and the world behind it. The red green and blue lines hold an infinite amount of possibilities despite their limited structure.  The paintings all contain scenes inspired by early 3D videogames and their simple geometries, joyful colors, and sometimes estranging emptiness. The basic geometries have a symbiotic relationship with the harsh lines that divide them into smaller, more diffuse, and undefined segments. At a distance these segments all seemingly merge into each other, revealing their hidden shapes and color.

Neon Staircase

A scene where the play of light divides the outside open sky from the inside of a dark building with shadows cast on a staircase that leads to an open door. The never clearly defined colors generate a feeling of ascending while the intensity of the colors become more and more vibrant when moving further away from the painting.

Flat

The side view of a building that emerges from the glow of the blinding city lights below. Rising high into the night sky the composition gives no clue as to how tall the building really is, while at the same time suggesting it could go on forever. The imposing emptiness of the center contrasting against the balconies create an undefinable atmosphere.

Corridor.jpg

Corridor

A corridor in an unspecified facility. Without any hint to what the particular purpose of the space is, a sense of mystery arises. This sense is strengthened by the light that illuminates the hallways from a place that cannot be seen. The comfort of the bright yellow light fades out into cold blue darkness.

Coral.jpg

Coral

A scene of a sea with a sun setting on the horizon with coral rocks in the foreground. It is a place in a world outside of reality and outside of time. Possibly completely uninhabited besides the fields of coral, this place is as if it were frozen in time, with the sun never actually setting. When viewed up close the sun seams almost to disappear, but when the viewing distance increases, the presence of the sun becomes more and more apparent.

Cave.jpg

Cave

A path in-between pillars leading through what seems to be a cave located on a plateau. From within this elevated location, one has a view on a body of water that brings a bright turquoise radiance into the scene. Still, on closer inspection, there are more colors emitting from the depths of the cave that become interwoven with the colors of the outside. This interplay of colors is constantly fluctuating depending on the viewpoint of the observer.
